Chitwan National Park (‘Chitwan’ means “in the heart of the jungle’) covers 932 sq. km. in the flat lowland region of southern Nepal. It is one of the most important sub-tropical parks on the Indian subcontinent with populations of more than 43 species of mammals in the park. The park is especially renowned for its protection of the endangered one- horned rhinoceros, tiger, and gharial crocodile along with many other common species of wild animal. The estimated population of rhinos is around 400. The park also secures populations of endangered species such as gaur, wild elephant, four horned antelope, striped hyena, pangolin, Gangetic dolphin, monitor lizard, and python.

Some of the other animals found in the park are sambar, chital, hog deer, barking deer, sloth deer, common leopard, ratel, palm civet, wild dog, langur and rhesus monkeys.

More than 45 species of amphibians and reptiles are found in the park, some of which are the marsh mugger crocodile, cobra, green pit viper and various species of frogs and tortoises. The park is actively engaged in the scientific study of several species of wild flora and fauna.

There are over 450 species of birds in the park. Among the endangered birds are the Bengal florican, giant hornbill, lesser florican, black stork and white stork. A few of the common birds seen are peafowl, red jungle fowl, and different species of egrets, herons, kingfishers, flycatchers and woodpeckers. The best times for bird watching are in March and December.


Tour Program for Chitwan National Park

With the comfortable stay in one of several Jungle Lodges and/or Tented Camps set in Nepal’s famous National parks of Chitwan and Bardia, you can enjoy an elephant-back safari to observe the rare great one horned rhinoceros, elusive tigers, leopards, crocodiles, bears, many species of deer, monkeys and many other rare & exotic animals & birds. Take nature walks to experience the close encounter with the armor-plated one-horned rhinoceros and follow tiger tracks through the thick sub-tropical jungles with trained local naturalists. A jungle jeep drive through the park and boat ride down the rivers are also included. Birdwatchers will be awarded with many rare species that make up the 400 plus species recorded in the parks.

After morning breakfast, drive from Kathmandu to Chitwan takes about 5 hrs.You will enjoy scenic views of snowcapped mountains, rivers, green hills, terraced farms and rivers along the ride.You will reach Chitwan just in time for lunch. Alternatively you can take a short flight from Kathmandu to Chitwan (Bharatpur Airport) which takes about 25 minutes.

After lunch you can enjoy jungle activities in Chitwan National Park. In the evening take part in a cultural program performed by Tharu, the indigenous community of inner Terai.

During your stay in Chitwan National Park, you will enjoy the following activities:

Canoe Trip: Take canoe trip on either Rapti River or BudhiRapti River which border the National Park. The river is a prime habitat for two types of crocodiles, the Gharial and Mugger.

Bird Watching: For the bird watchers, the park is a paradise for over 450 species of exotic birds including domestic and migratory birds. Many of them are rare and threatened, including the Great pied hornbill, Bengal Florican, Peregrine falcon, lesser adjutant storks, etc.

Elephant safari or Jeep Safari: Enjoy elephant ride to view the wild life in actionin their natural habitat. Those who are not interested in Elephant safari can take Jeep Safari instead. Jeep Safari includes a 4WD Jeep tour into deeper section of the park- such as Ox-bow lake- allowing you a chance to witness rare wildlife species.

Nature Walk: Go on a nature walk under the guidance of our experienced naturalists/botanistsinside the park. This is the ideal opportunity to explore and experience and learnabout the diversity of Himalayan flora and fauna.

Elephant Breeding Centre: Chitwan National Park is home to the first Elephant breeding center in Asia. Observeelephant and their calves at close quarters. This center is run by the government and its purpose is to provide a safe breeding habitat for elephants.

Village tour: Excursion in Tharu village is a heart-warming experience you don’t want to miss. Tharus are the indigenous inhabitant of the inner Terai. Enjoy their cuisine, interact, and experience their traditional way of life.

Cultural Program: In the evening you will get an opportunity to participate in Tharucultural folk dance. The unique stick dance performed by Tharu youth adorned in their traditional attires is the most popular activity among visitors.

Elephant Bathing: Elephant bathing is another exciting program for tourists. If you wish, you can bathe elephants in the river under the guidance of Mahouts.  

Crocodile Walk: The park also offers a unique crocodile walk program wherein you will follow a trail along the bank of Rapti / Narayani River passing through grassland and forest to spot crocodiles out in the wild.

After morning breakfast, continue with some more jungle activities.Later drive back from Chitwan to Kathmandu takes about 5 hrs. While on your drive, you will enjoy the view of rivers, green hills, rice terraced fields, and locals engaged in their daily life activities.

If you wish to avoid travelling by road and save time, you can take a short flight back to Kathmandu fromChitwan which takes about 25 minutes.
